I Want to Fall In Love- Larry Hovis

It’s no secret that Hogan’s Heroes is one of my favorite TV shows, but once I found out that Larry Hovis, aka Sgt. Andrew Carter, was also a singer, I instantly fell in love with his voice.  He recorded a solo album in 1959 titled “My Heart Belongs to Only You.”  He also made recordings with The Bill Gannon Trio and The Mascots.

(Oddly enough, this was posted on Sweetest Day 2015)

I Want To Fall In Love – Written and Performed by Larry Hovis

Here I am with my heart in my hand,

and I want to fall in love.

Here I am thinking, it would be grand

if I just would fall in love.

I’m tired of being, all alone.

No one to call my very own.

So here I am, hoping you’ll understand

why I want to fall in love.

I want to fall in love.

I’m tired of being all alone.

No one to call my very own.

So here I am, hoping you’ll understand

Why I want to fall in love.

I want to fall in love.

I want to fall in love.

The Great Pretender

The Great Pretender

Performed by The Platters  Written by Buck Yam

Oh-oh, yes I’m the great pretender
Pretending that I’m doing well
My need is such I pretend too much
I’m lonely but no one can tell

Oh-oh, yes I’m the great pretender
Adrift in a world of my own
I’ve played the game but to my real shame
You’ve left me to grieve all alone

Too real is this feeling of make-believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can’t conceal

Oh-oh Yes I’m the great pretender
Just laughin’ and gay like a clown
I seem to be what I’m not, you see
I’m wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you’re still around

Too real is this feeling of make-believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can’t conceal

Yes I’m the great pretender
Just laughin’ and gay like the clown
I seem to be what I’m not, you see
I’m wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you’re still around   (still around)

Bugs Bunny- Hillbilly Hare

Once you get this song into your head, you’ll be trying to sing it all day.  Here are the words to Bugs Bunny’s Hillbilly Square Dance.  As always, video below.

Let’s all Square Dance.
Places all.
Bow to your corner,
bow to your own.

Three hands up and round you go,
break it up with a dosey do.
Chicken in the bread pan kickin’ out dough.
Skip to ma Lou, my darling.

The old lady out, you pretty little thing,
promenade around the ring.
Big foot up and little foot down,
make that big foot jar the ground.

Lady step back and two gents in,
back you go and forward again.
Step right up with an elbow swing.
Skip to ma Lou, my darling.

Allemande left with the old left hand,
follow through with a right-left grand.
Meet your honey with a great big smile,
promenade Indian style.

*Bugs Bunny takes over*

Promenade across the floor,
sashay right on out the door.
Out the door and into the glade,
and everybody promenade.

Step right up, you’re doing fine,
I’ll pull your beard, you pull mine.
Yank it again like you did before,
break it up with a tug o’war.

Now into the brook and fish for the trout,
dive right in and splash about.
Trout, trout, pretty little trout,
one more splash and come right out.

Shake like a hound dog, shake again,
wallow around in the ol’ pig pen.
Wallow some more, y’all know how,
roll around like an ol’ fat sow.

Allemande left with your left hand,
follow through with a right-left grand.
Now leave your partner, the dirty ol’ thing,
follow through with an elbow swing.

Grab a fence post, hold it tight,
womp your partner with all your might.
Hit him in the chin, hit him in the head,
hit him again, that critter ain’t dead.

Womp him low and womp him high,
stick your finger in his eye.
Pretty little rhythm, pretty little sound,
bang your heads against the ground.

Promenade all around the room,
promenade like a bride and groom.
Open up the door and step right in,
close the door and into a spin.

Whirl, whirl, twist and twirl,
jump all round like a flyin’ squirrel.
Now don’t you cuss and don’t you swear,
just come right out and form a square.

Now right hand over and left hand under,
both join hands and run like thunder.
Over the hill and over the dale,
duck your head and lift your tail.

Don’t you stray and don’t you roam,
turn around and promenade home.
Corn in the crib pen, wheat in the sack,
turn your partner and promenade back.

And now you’re home.
Bow to your partner.
Bow to the gent across the hall.
And that is all.

California Saga

I wanted to post a few things from my vacation, which was my 2nd trip to California.  To kick off the next few posts, here is a song by The Beach Boys called California Saga.  As always, you can play the video below while reading the lyrics.

“California Saga: California”

Written by Al Jardine

On my way to sunny California
On my way to spend another sunny day

Water, water get yourself in the cool, clear, water
The sun shines brightly down on Penny’s place
The sun shines brightly down on the bay
The air’s so clean it’ll just take your mind away
Take your mind away
Take your mind away

Have you ever been south of Monterey
Barrancas carve the coast line and the chaparral flows to the sea
‘Neath waves of golden sunshine
And have you ever been north of Morro Bay
The south coast plows the sea
And the people there are of the breed
They don’t need electricity
Water, water, cool cascades of clear, clear water
The sun dance final scene sets the hills ablaze.
Horizon edges quick up the mountain’s way.

Have you ever been down Salinas way?
Where Steinbeck found the valley
And he wrote about it the way it was in his travelin’s with Charley
And have you ever walked down through the sycamores
Where the farmhouse used to be
There the monarch’s autumn journey ends
On a windswept cyprus tree

Water get water get yourself in that
Get yourself in that get yourself in that cool, clear, water
The sun shines brightly down on Penny’s place
Get yourself in that water
The air’s so clean that it just takes your mind away
Take your mind away
Take your mind away

Have you ever been to a festival, the Big Sur congregation?
Where Country Joe will do his show
And he’d sing about liberty
And the people there in the open air, one big family.
Yeah the people there love to sing and share
Their new found liberty

The Boys Are Back in Town

Listening to the song “The Boys Are Back in Town” by Patty Loveless always conjures up two types of images for me.  One is sailors coming back into port after the war, and the other image is of baseball players coming back after the winter break.  Since the Milwaukee Brewers 2015 season opener is only 2 days away, I picked out this song and made my own video to go with it.  It shows some of my favorite players like Nori Aoki, Carlos Gomez, Jonathan Lucroy, Matt Garza and Bob Uecker.

“The Boys Are Back In Town” by Patty Loveless

 Gather ’round, ladies, gather ’round
Hear the news that’s comin’ down
The ships are in and the sails are down
The boys are back in town

Get your skirts down off the rack
The boys are in and the boys are back
And no time now for takin’ slack
The boys are back in town

Yeah, the boys are back in town
Your true love can be found
Gather ’round the old playground
The boys are back in town

They’ve been gone for quite a while
Man, it’s good to see ’em smile
Now they’re loaded up on style
The boys are back in town

Come in the house, get out of the car
See ’em coming down the road
Gonna raise some hell ’cause don’t you know
The boys are back in town

Well, the boys are back in town
Your true love can be found
Gather ’round the old playground
The boys are back in town

Well, the boys are back in town
Your true love can be found
Gather ’round the old playground
The boys are back in town

Liberty’s Kids

Liberty’s Kids is one of my favorite cartoon TV shows.  I found my DVD collection while doing some Spring Cleaning today.  The show is about 3 kids who work for Ben Franklin in the newspaper business and they get mixed up in all kinds of events before and during the Revolutionary War.

I like the theme song (minus the rap part)

Looking at Life Through My Own Eyes (Liberty’s Kids theme song)

Sung by Kayla Hinkle and Aaron Carter (I’m not sure of the writer, this was transcribed from the opening— Video below)

I see a land with liberty for all

Yet still I know the truth will rise and fall

That’s just the way it goes

A word now to the wise

The world was made to change

Each day is a surprise

I’m lookin’ at life through my own eyes

Searchin’ for a hero to idolize

Feeling the pain as innocence dies

Looking at life through my own eyes

I take my heart into battle

Give that freedom bell a rattle

Get my independence signed

Declare it on the dotted line

In Philadelphia freedom ring

And patriotic voices sing

Red White & Blue

never give up

We represent America

I’m hoping and praying for a brighter day

I listen to my heart and I obey

How can I see it any other way?

I’m looking at life (looking at life)

Through my own eyes

Catalogue- Heywood Banks

The other day I was browsing on Pinterest…. gazing at all the pictures of couples having fun, getting engaged and the wedding ideas.  I pin them thinking, ‘One day…. That’ll be me on day.  I’ll have that kind of fun.’  Then I thought about the song Heywood Banks wrote called Catalogue.

This time, I couldn’t find a video on YouTube for you to listen along so I decided to make one myself.  I used Power Point to put it together and Wondershare to convert it.  Unfortunately, in the conversion it is about 1.5 seconds fast so all the pictures don’t match that well.  I still had fun making it.  It look about a week too.  Here’s my video and Heywood’s lyrics below.

Also visit his website to see more videos, order merchandise etc.

Catalogue- written and performed by Heywood Banks

I wanna have fun like they do in the catalogue
Giggle up in the warm summer breeze
Butter-cotton jersey
Periwinkle silk

I wanna have fun like they do in the catalogue
Chase the dog on the beach
Showin’ my teeth
Hand-crafted
Simple pleasure

Well I’d like to place an order please
I’d like to be eternally
Young and pretty and never broke
It can’t be on back order
I need overnight delivery
Happy and laughing at an inside joke

I wanna have fun like they do in the catalogue
Got no boss, got no bills, sleepin’ late
Hand-combed pair available
Khaki, oatmeal and stone

I wanna have fun like they do in the catalogue
Holdin’ hands on the dock at the compound
Small only
Not available in stores

Well I’d like to place an order please
I’d like to be eternally
Young and pretty and never broke
It can’t be on back order
I need overnight delivery
Happy and laughing at an inside joke

(What do you mean my card’s declined?)

I wanna have fun like they do in the catalogue
Have fun like they do in the catalogue
Have fun like they do in the catalogue
Have fun like they do in the catalogue

Frank Sinatra- Imagination

Imagination

Written by Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke in 1940 and by Frank Sinatra with The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra on May 1, 1961 for the I Remember Tommy album.

Imagination is funny,
it makes a cloudy day sunny
Makes a bee think of honey
just as I think of you

Imagination is crazy,
your whole perspective gets hazy
Starts you asking a daisy
“What to do, what to do?”

Have you ever felt a gentle touch
and then a kiss
And then and then,
find it’s only your imagination again?
Oh, well

Imagination is silly,
you go around willy-nilly
For example I go around wanting you
And yet I can’t imagine that you want me, too
Have you ever felt a gentle touch
and then a kiss
And then and then,
find it’s only your imagination again?
Oh, well

Imagination is silly,
you go around willy-nilly
For example I go around wanting you
And yet I can’t imagine that you want me,
can’t imagine that you want me
can’t imagine that you
want
me
too

Belleau Wood- Garth Brooks

One of my all time favorite Christmas song is not a traditional carol.  It’s also one song that always makes me cry. That being said, it should be no surprise then that it is a song with historical significance.  The Christmas Truce of WWI is a piece of history that has always intrigued me.  I was looking up exactly which countries took part in the truce and just realized that this is the 100th anniversary.    The Guardian published photos of the re-inactment on this anniversary

The History channel has some nice information as well.

and if you want to see a full length movie, I recommend, Joyeux Noel.  I have the movie on DVD, but could only find it for free on You Tube in sections.

The video at the bottom has some very nice photos.  I chose this instead of the live version of Garth Brooks singing it.

 Belleau Wood

Written by Garth Brooks and Joe Henry

Oh, the snowflakes fell in silence
Over Belleau Wood that night
For a Christmas truce had been declared
By both sides of the fight
As we lay there in our trenches
The silence broke in two
By a German soldier singing
A song that we all knew

Though I did not know the language
The song was “Silent Night”

Then I heard my buddy whisper,
“All is calm and all is bright”
Then the fear and doubt surrounded me
‘Cause I’d die if I was wrong
But I stood up in my trench
And I began to sing along

Then across the frozen battlefield
Another’s voice joined in
Until one by one each man became
A singer of the hymn

Then I thought that I was dreaming
For right there in my sight
Stood the German soldier
‘Neath the falling flakes of white
And he raised his hand and smiled at me
As if he seemed to say
Here’s hoping we both live
To see us find a better way

Then the devil’s clock struck midnight
And the skies lit up again
And the battlefield where heaven stood
Was blown to hell again

But for just one fleeting moment
The answer seemed so clear
Heaven’s not beyond the clouds
It’s just beyond the fear

No, heaven’s not beyond the clouds
It’s for us to find it here

GI Jive- Louis Jordan

Louis Jordan is my favorite Jazz singer.  I was thinking about him today and one of my favorite songs.

GI Jive

This is the G. I. Jive

Man alive
It starts with the bugler blowin’ reveille over your bed when you arrive
Jack, that’s the G. I. Jive

Roodley-toot
Jump in your suit
Make a salute
Boot!!

After you wash and dress
More or less
You go get your breakfast in a beautiful little caf they call “The Mess”
Jack, when you convalesce

Outta your seat
Into the street
Make with the feet
Reet!!

If you’re a P-V-T, your duty
Is to salute to L-I-E-U-T
But if you brush the L-I-E-U-T
The M-P makes you K-P on the Q-T

This is the G. I. Jive
Man alive
They give you a private tank that features a little device called “fluid drive”
Hey Jack, after you revive

Chuck all your junk
Back in the trunk
Fall on your bunk
Clunk!!

This is the G. I. Jive
Man alive
They give you a private tank that features a little device called “fluid drive”
Hey Jack, after you still survive
Chuck all your junk
Back in the trunk
Fall on your bunk
Clunk!!
